Capturing the personality or expression of children, people, and pets has long been a fascination of mine. To me it is a form of visual storytelling - a beautiful way to capture a moment in time.

I have explored a variety of mediums in portraiture, many of which are featured in this portfolio selection. Without a doubt, watercolors are one of my absolute favorites for portraiture. Their natural properties allow the building of layers and washes of rich translucent color that beautifully render the life-like-ness of skin, eyes, lips, and hair.

Many of these portrait examples were created from a casual snapshot or two that caught a real, natural moment. While studio photos are beautiful, I prefer the unposed wonder of an spontaneous, personal photo. I am always pleased when a portrait I have interpreted through paint or pencils can draw the viewer further into the story... wondering what is behind that smile, or those big brown eyes.
